Mayor Malik D. Evans has announced that all City R-Centers will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, to provide support for students during the ongoing school closures in Rochester. Students will receive an afternoon snack and dinner at these centers while schools remain closed.

This decision comes as the National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory, warning of wind chills ranging from 15 to 20 degrees below zero in the area.

"We want residents to be prepared for the extreme wind chills forecasted over the next day or two," stated Mayor Evans. "The R-Centers will be open to help students stay safe and warm, with food and activities during this time."

Residents are reminded by city officials about increased risks such as fire hazards and carbon monoxide poisoning during extremely cold weather. To ensure safety, it is advised not to leave pets outside, avoid using stoves or cooking appliances for warmth, and follow safety guidelines when using space heaters and generators.

The public is also encouraged to limit outdoor exposure, cover exposed skin adequately, check on elderly family members and neighbors, and report any power outages by calling RG&E at 1-800-743-1701.
