Mayor Malik D. Evans has announced the opening of all City R-Centers on Wednesday, January 22, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., providing an afternoon snack and dinner for students during the closure of Rochester City Schools.
The decision comes as the National Weather Service issues a Cold Weather Advisory for the area, predicting wind chills between 15 to 20 degrees below zero. Mayor Evans stated, "We want residents to be prepared for the extreme wind chills forecasted over the next day or two. The R-Centers will be open to help students stay safe and warm, with food and activities during this time."
Residents are also reminded by city officials about increased risks such as fire hazards and carbon monoxide poisoning during cold weather. Recommendations include not leaving pets outside, avoiding using stoves or cooking appliances for warmth, ensuring space heaters are placed safely away from combustible materials, placing generators outside to prevent carbon monoxide exposure, limiting outdoor exposure, covering exposed skin, checking on elderly family members and neighbors, and reporting power interruptions to RG&E at 1-800-743-1701.
