Mayor Malik D. Evans has announced the launch of a new Crisis Intervention Services (CIS) mobile-response vehicle in Rochester. This initiative is designed to assist city staff from the Department of Recreation and Human Services' Crisis Intervention Services team in providing immediate support at crime scenes. The vehicle offers a private and safe space for victims and their families, while also serving as a location where investigators and the Medical Examiner’s Office can communicate important information.
Mayor Evans emphasized the importance of this service, stating, “The Crisis Intervention Services Mobile Response Vehicle will serve as an on-scene haven where those who are thrust into the sudden confusion and emotional trauma of losing a loved one to violence can quiet their mind, collect their thoughts and learn about the services that can help them through their grief.” He expressed gratitude towards the Congressional delegation for supporting this initiative.
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer highlighted his role in securing funding for this project, noting its significance in enhancing first responders' effectiveness. “This unit will not only enhance the effectiveness of our first responders but also deliver essential care and comfort to victims of violence and those affected by crises,” he said.
Congressman Joe Morelle echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of having a secure place for families during crises. “I was proud to help secure funding for this project, and I look forward to future opportunities to partner with the City of Rochester’s ongoing efforts,” he stated.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also commended Rochester's efforts, saying, “The City of Rochester’s Crisis Intervention Services unit is an invaluable resource... I’m proud to have helped secure funding for this unit.”
The CIS Mobile-Response Vehicle is equipped with features such as a powered wheelchair lift, compact bathroom, microwave, mini-fridge, awning, storage space, table, and comfortable seating. These amenities aim to provide a welcoming atmosphere for members of the Homicide Response Team as they support grieving families over time.
Funding for this mobile unit was secured through Congressionally Directed Spending packages facilitated by Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer; Senator Kirsten Gillibrand; and U.S. Rep. Joseph Morelle.
