Representatives from the Urban League of Rochester’s Black Scholars Program are set to deliver a presentation on college applications at the Thursday Thinkers: Insights into Rochester forum. The event will take place on October 17, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Rochester Community Sports Complex located at 460 Oak St.
Taureean Uthman, who serves as the vice president of Youth Education and Development for the Urban League, will guide the discussion. The focus will be on both challenges and opportunities that Black scholars face during the college application process.
The theme for this month’s Thursday Thinkers is aimed at aiding parents in supporting their children's academic success.
On October 24, another session titled "Uncovering the Mystery of Scholarships and Financial Aid During the College Application Season" is scheduled. This session will also occur from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the same venue. Attendees will have a chance to explore various scholarship and financial aid options available to students, including FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), CSS Profile, Excelsior Scholarship, Rochester Institute of Technology’s Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars program, and University of Rochester’s Rochester Promise. The event's presenting partner is the Rochester Education Foundation, with Tawana Jackson and Phil Hounshell leading the conversation.
Thursday Thinkers is an enrichment series designed for adults and families by the City’s Department of Recreation and Human Services (DRHS). Each event features discussions with representatives from government bodies, community agencies, programs, and other resources. Events are organized on at least two Thursday evenings each month at a City R-Center.
