On May 13, 2024, the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council initiated a Youth Mental Health Survey to gain valuable insights into the mental health needs of Rochester's youth. This initiative aims to better advocate for young people in the city and encourage their participation in various available youth services.

"We are asking our peers to take this survey and be part of the Youth Mental Health Initiative so we can make sure Rochester’s youth play a role in improving their own mental health," said YVOV Spokesperson Sarah Adams. "Rochester’s youth are talented, we are ambitious, and we can do whatever we set our minds to. I am calling on all city youth to rise to the occasion and recognize the importance of taking care of their mental health.”

Mayor Malik D. Evans expressed his gratitude towards the young leaders of YVOV for initiating this crucial conversation about mental health. "This topic is arguably one of the most important conversations our community can have, and I’m thankful for the young people of YVOV who are taking the lead to get that conversation started," he said.

In collaboration with The Wilson Foundation, YVOV has developed an educational program aimed at empowering youth about mental health awareness. Through community input gathered by the newly formed Youth Mental Health Board, YVOV intends to understand and address Rochester's youth mental health needs effectively.

The survey is open not only to young people but also adults working with them such as teachers and R-Center staff. The responses will be sorted by age group to identify specific needs at different life stages.

Mayor Evans also encouraged city youth and their parents to consider participating in various City summer programs. He emphasized that these programs provide safe environments where children can stay active, continue learning, and enjoy their summer break while avoiding potential negative influences.

YVOV's mission is to connect, train, advise Rochester’s youth leaders, city governance, adult advisors, and community stakeholders. The organization seeks to establish a diverse membership of youth who can provide expertise in various fields to inform and impact policies related to youth issues.
