Your smartphone can be a crucial tool in life-threatening situations. The smartphone emergency medical identification tool (SEMID) enables users to store important medical details on their phones. This feature is particularly useful for emergency care teams and first responders when immediate access to such information is essential.
A study by University of Rochester researchers highlighted the effectiveness of the SEMID tool in trauma cases where patients could not provide their own medical information. It revealed that for patients using the SEMID feature, the stored information was relevant in 75% of cases.
Stored information in a SEMID includes one's identification, height and weight, age, allergies, medical history, current medications, blood type, and emergency contacts. This information becomes vital if a patient is unresponsive or unable to communicate, allowing care teams to take informed steps during treatment.
However, despite its potential to save lives, few smartphone users have taken advantage of setting up a medical ID. A 2021 study noted that of 30 patients arriving at a hospital with a smartphone, only 8 had their SEMID information set up. This led the Kessler Trauma Center to launch a public campaign to increase awareness and use of the SEMID feature.
For those with a smartphone, setting up a medical ID is straightforward and can be done in minutes. On an iPhone, users need to access the Health app, enter their medical information, and allow access to emergency responders. On an Android, the process involves entering information under the Safety and Emergency settings and enabling visibility on the lock screen.
UR Medicine's Strong Memorial Hospital, the only Level 1 trauma center in Rochester, NY, underscores the importance of the SEMID tool. The center is dedicated to providing specialized care for traumatic injuries, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for any emergency situation.
