Wilmot Cancer Institute has announced the addition of Lori Medeiros, MD, a recognized breast cancer surgeon, to its Pluta Comprehensive Breast Care Program. Alongside her role in the University of Rochester Medical Center Department of Surgery, Medeiros will also take on newly created positions as Wilmot’s Associate Medical Director for Regional Surgical Services and Director of Cancer Surgery Business Development. These roles aim to expand Wilmot's influence and enhance patient access to comprehensive breast cancer care.
Medeiros began seeing patients at Wilmot’s Pluta and Webster locations on February 25. Before joining URMC, she was with Rochester Regional Health since 2008, holding both clinical and administrative roles.
She is well-known in the Rochester community, having served as Executive Director of the Breast Service Line and Executive Director for Cancer Business Development at RRH. There, she founded a respected Breast Center of Excellence and now brings that expertise to Wilmot’s program.
A native Canadian, Medeiros completed her medical degree and specialty training at McGill University in Montreal. She also holds an MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her certifications include board certification by both the American Board of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, along with certification in breast ultrasound through the American Society of Breast Surgeons.
“Throughout my career, I’ve worked in many different practice settings from single payer, to private to employed and in many administrative roles," said Medeiros. "This journey has allowed me the opportunity to see things from both the patient and physician perspective as well as that of other key stakeholders." She expressed excitement about her new partnership with URMC: “This new partnership with URMC is exciting from all perspectives and will ensure my patients receive not only meaningful and timely care but also access to cutting-edge scientific and research opportunities in breast care.”
Medeiros has contributed to developing techniques in oncoplastic surgery that improve cosmetic outcomes for breast cancer patients. She is currently collaborating with a team at Rochester Institute of Technology on a thermal imaging technique for early breast cancer detection. At Wilmot, she plans to conduct research focusing on patient decision-making related to cancer diagnosis and treatment preferences.
In her additional roles at Wilmot, Medeiros will work closely with Medical Director Daniel Mulkerin, MD, on regional strategies. Her surgical expertise complements Mulkerin’s background as a medical oncologist. She aims to expand surgical services regionally while strengthening collaborations at Wilmot Cancer Center’s main location on the URMC campus. Using evidence-based research will be integral in planning treatment decisions with patients for optimal experiences and outcomes across a 27-county area in upstate New York.
Her appointment reinforces Wilmot’s status as a leading regional breast cancer program in Monroe County. Her extensive experience is expected to drive growth and innovation within their breast cancer care offerings.
