Mayor Malik D. Evans has announced that the City of Rochester R-Centers will operate during daytime hours while schools are closed for the February recess. This change aims to support families during the break from normal school schedules.
"Kids love their long breaks from school, and we're glad to open City R-Centers to help families with the disruption to their normal schedules," said Mayor Evans. "Parents can be assured that their children are in a fun and engaging environment that keeps them healthy, safe, and learning while school is out."
The R-Centers will be open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., between February 18 and 21. However, they will remain closed on February 17 due to Presidents Day.
Dr. Shirley Green, commissioner of the Department of Recreation and Human Services, emphasized the importance of these centers during school breaks. "Time off from school provides a welcome break for students and teachers, and we are here to support working parents and those who rely on school meals to make sure their kids get enough to eat each day during breaks," she stated. "When school's out, we're open with a staff of caring adults dedicated to keeping kids busy with healthy and fun activities and meals."
City R-Centers offer numerous programs for both children and adults. These include traditional sports, team sports, cooking classes, dance classes, computer coding classes, life-skills training, and nature exploration. The programs aim at academic enrichment and promoting healthy childhood development.
Typically, when schools are in session, most R-Centers operate from 2:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and provide dinner services. All city residents can participate in recreation programs or use facilities free of charge.
Residents interested in these services can create an online account using the R-Central registration tool available on the City website. For more information about City R-Centers' locations and winter programs descriptions, visit www.cityofrochester.gov/recreation.
