The City of Rochester and Monroe County have announced the opening of applications for their summer youth employment programs. The Summer of Opportunity Program (SOOP) and the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) are designed for young people aged 14 to 20 who are enrolled in middle school, high school, or pursuing a high school equivalency diploma.

These programs, run in collaboration with RochesterWorks, offer six weeks of paid internships. Participants gain skills that help them prepare for future academic and professional endeavors. Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled, and early submission is encouraged. Applicants must be at least 14 years old by May 31.

Upon completing the application process, candidates can interview for various paid summer jobs and internships. Previous employers include the City of Rochester, community organizations, colleges, and local businesses.

Applicants need to provide several documents before the deadline: a work permit, social security card, school report card, and an official photo ID such as a school ID or driver's license. However, they can begin the application process without these documents.

To assist applicants in submitting their paperwork, program administrators will hold four document drop-off events at the Loretta C. Scott Center for Human Services on specified dates between February and April.
