Mayor Malik D. Evans has announced that all City R-Centers will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, as Rochester City Schools remain closed. During this time, students will receive an afternoon snack and dinner.

The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for the area, forecasting wind chills of 15 to 20 degrees below zero. Mayor Evans stated, "We want residents to be prepared for the extreme wind chills forecasted over the next day or two." He added that "the R-Centers will be open to help students stay safe and warm, with food and activities during this time."

The city advises residents about increased risks of fire, carbon monoxide poisoning, and other hazards during cold weather. Safety measures include not leaving pets outside, avoiding the use of stoves for warmth, ensuring space heaters are used safely by keeping them away from combustible materials and never using extension cords with them. Generators should be placed outdoors to prevent carbon monoxide exposure.

Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities and cover exposed skin. Checking on elderly family members and neighbors is also recommended.

For power interruptions, residents can contact RG&E at 1-800-743-1701.

R-Center locations across the city include Adams R-Center at 85 Adams St., Avenue D R-Center at 200 Ave. D., Carter Street R-Center at 500 Carter St., among others.
