The Rochester Public Library and Monroe County Library System Boards of Trustees have announced the appointment of Emily Clasper as the new Director of the Rochester Public Library. This decision follows a nationwide search initiated after Patricia Uttaro declared her intention to retire in February. Clasper, who is currently the Associate Director of the library, will assume her new role on January 13, 2025.
Clasper has a background in library management, having served as Director of Service Strategies for the University of Rochester’s River Campus Libraries. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from SUNY Geneseo and a Master of Library and Information Science from Long Island University. "I am thrilled and honored for this opportunity to serve the Rochester community," Clasper expressed. "This is a mission that is dear to my heart because our libraries are essential to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive."
Patricia Uttaro's tenure as director saw significant growth in library attendance and program utilization. Her leadership was marked by numerous innovative programs such as the Archive of Black History, Shoulders to Stand on LGBTQ Archive, Business Insight Center at Central Library, Raising a Reader, Talking is Teaching programs, and RPL GO! bookmobile launch.
Uttaro also spearheaded initiatives like eliminating overdue book fees which encouraged more families to return to local libraries and focused on digital equity ensuring access to high-speed internet regardless of income or location. Major projects under her guidance included ROC the Riverway Rundel North Terrace development and renovations at various branches.
Donna P. Benjamin, President of the Rochester Public Library Board of Trustees said, “Patty Uttaro has built a solid foundation by consistently providing more and better library services to our community.” Mayor Evans added his praise stating that Uttaro was an exceptional leader for 16 years: “I am also pleased to have Emily Clasper step into the role.”
County Executive Adam J. Bello remarked on Uttaro’s contributions: “As Patty transitions to a well-earned retirement...our community is incredibly fortunate to welcome Emily Clasper.” Christopher Corcoran from Monroe County Library System Board echoed these sentiments expressing confidence in Clasper’s leadership abilities.
Uttaro began her career with RPL in 1986 as a clerk before ascending through various roles leading up to her directorship starting in 2009. Reflecting on her career she stated: “Serving the community as Library Director has been a privilege and an honor.”
