In response to a Winter Weather Advisory, motorists are urged to exercise caution during Thursday's morning and evening commutes. Snow accumulations and high winds may create challenging driving conditions.
Mayor Malik D. Evans emphasized the importance of safety: “The first significant snowfall of the year always carries the risk that our winter driving skills might be a little rusty, and the possibility for snow-covered roads and limited visibility during the commutes calls for us to use extra caution.” He advised patience, allowing extra time, slowing down, and maintaining distance on slippery roads to ensure safe travel.
The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for Rochester from 10 p.m. Wednesday through 4 a.m. Friday. Forecasts predict snow accumulations between 3 to 5 inches with wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour. Blowing snow could reduce visibility during peak commute times.
City services will deploy snowplows on residential streets when new snow reaches three inches, while sidewalks are cleared at four inches of accumulation. Main streets will be plowed continuously, with specific roadways treated with salt as necessary.
Motorists and property owners should:
- Be cautious of pedestrians in streets and children near school buses.
- Follow alternate side parking rules for efficient snowplow passage.
- Use PlowTrax, the City’s real-time snowplow tracker, available at www.cityofrochester.gov/plowtrax.
- Stay updated on travel advisories and other notices through local news.
- Clear sidewalks of snow and ice in front of their properties.
- Keep fire hydrants accessible.
