IRONDEQUOIT TOWN: 2020 Bow Hunt Program

Fundraiser event(1000)

Irondequoit Town recently issued the following announcement.

Monday, October 5th will mark the opening of the annual Deer Management Program Bow Hunt in Irondequoit. Since the late 1990s, this program, done in conjunction with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, has served as an effective tool to manage Irondequoit’s urban deer population, especially with regards to reducing deer-related motor vehicle accidents.

The Irondequoit Police Department administers the program, which is governed by Chapter 93 of the Town Code.

The Bow Hunt only takes place on properties that have consented to allowing bow hunting on the premises and must pass certain requirements relative to proximity to residences and roadways. Prior to being accepted as a hunting site, the Irondequoit Police Department conducts a site visit to ensure safety and compatibility with the Town Code. Only hunters who are authorized to participate in the program and who have passed a stringent proficiency test are eligible to take part. The program currently has a full roster of authorized and proficient hunters. If you are interested in participating in this program in the future, please check the website which will announce any new openings. As openings become available, new hunters who meet the qualifications and proficiency standards will be contacted after they apply.

The bow hunt only takes place on school days and does not occur if either district is off for the day. With the increase used of remote learning for students, the Irondequoit Police Department is closely coordinating with both school districts to ensure resident safety. Hunting is only permitted from sunrise to noon.

The hunt generally takes place through the second week of December, but may end sooner at the discretion of the Town.
