Empire State Development and Rochester Mayor Malik Evans have introduced an updated design for the Aqueduct Reimagined project. This initiative, part of the "ROC the Riverway" program, aims to enhance pedestrian and bicycle access along the Genesee River in Rochester, New York. The plan involves transforming the historic Erie Canal Aqueduct and Broad Street Bridge into a vibrant area celebrating Rochester's cultural heritage.

The project will eliminate vehicular traffic from the Broad Street Bridge and create new riverfront promenades to improve connectivity within the Genesee Riverway Trail network. Hope Knight, President and CEO of Empire State Development, stated that "The Aqueduct Reimagined is the latest and greatest example of ESD’s successful efforts to spur development and provide recreational opportunities along the banks of the Genesee River."

State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez highlighted that "The City of Rochester is being transformed by sensible infrastructure projects such as Aqueduct Reimagined." Meanwhile, Mayor Malik D. Evans emphasized that "Aqueduct Reimagined will be a dramatic force for much-needed, positive change Downtown."

Governor Kathy Hochul announced an additional $4 million investment from the Regional Revitalization Partnership (RRP) to complete project design by 2027. The total cost is estimated at $175 million. Previously, New York state committed $9.5 million for design as part of ROC The Riverway.

Local entities like Monroe County and Rochester Gas & Electric are contributing to necessary infrastructure upgrades. Earlier this year, Governor Hochul outlined a $2 million investment for public-facing upgrades at nearby Aqueduct Park.

A community engagement process has been implemented for feedback on design concepts reflecting public input while honoring historical significance. An Open House & Tour event during ROC The Riverway Weekend invites public participation.

State Senator Samra Brouk expressed support by stating, "Projects like ROC the Riverway and The Aqueduct Reimagined are at the forefront of revitalizing Rochester." Assemblymember Harry Bronson noted these initiatives honor history while preparing for future growth with jobs and housing opportunities.

Assemblymember Demond Meeks acknowledged progress in innovative transportation models through major initiatives like Aqueduct Reimagined: "This project will be a unique addition to attract tourists worldwide." Assemblymember Sarah Clark added that this investment creates new development opportunities focused on inclusivity.

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello remarked on how this transformation would impact downtown living: "Thanks to Gov. Hochul for her leadership in enabling state and local collaboration on transformative projects."
