The City of Rochester is adjusting the operating hours of its R-Centers during the upcoming two-week holiday recess, according to an announcement made by Mayor Malik D. Evans. The centers will be open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the exception of Christmas and New Year’s Day, from December 23 through January 3.

Mayor Evans highlighted the benefits for families during this period, stating, “Kids are looking forward to their holiday break, but these interruptions to the family schedule can also offer their own set of challenges for parents.” He added that aligning R-Center hours with traditional workdays provides assurance for parents that their children are in a “fun and engaging environment” that keeps them “healthy, safe and learning.”

Dr. Shirley Green, commissioner of the Department of Recreation and Human Services, emphasized the support offered by R-Centers during school breaks: “Time off from school provides a welcome break for students and teachers, but for working parents and those who rely on school meals…extended breaks can be a very stressful time.” She reassured parents that “when school’s out, we’re open,” offering activities and meals.

Winter recreation programs at R-Centers began earlier this week and will run until February 28. These programs include sports, cooking classes, dance lessons, computer coding classes, life-skills training, and nature exploration.

Typically when schools are in session, R-Centers operate from 2:30 to 9 p.m. on weekdays. All city residents are eligible to participate in these programs or use recreation facilities.

Residents interested in these services can create an account via the R-Central registration tool available on the City website. Further details about locations and winter programs can be found at www.cityofrochester.gov/recreation.
