J.U.S.T. L.A.W. has commenced its seventh year, aiming to educate students in Rochester about the criminal justice system while providing insights into youth perspectives for those who administer the law. This initiative involves nearly 2,000 students from 24 middle schools within the Rochester City School District, engaging with judges from New York State Court’s 7th Judicial District.

The program is divided into two components: J.U.S.T., which stands for Justice, Understanding, and Societal Trust, and L.A.W., representing Literacy, Attendance, and Writing. The first component focuses on fostering understanding between youth and the judiciary. The second component aims to enhance students’ comprehension of the court system through reading and writing exercises. Students will write essays titled “What Justice Means to Me” and receive mentorship on legal careers from members of the Rochester Black Bar Association.

Mayor Malik D. Evans emphasized the importance of this stage in education: “Middle school is a critical stage for our youth. Developing positive relationships with the justice system at that age lays the foundation for a bright future—and maybe even a career.” He expressed gratitude towards participants and partners involved in addressing justice-related topics.

Hon. Judge William K. Taylor highlighted the program’s potential: “The J.U.S.T. L.A.W. program represents a powerful opportunity for us to foster meaningful connections between the judiciary and the next generation… On behalf of our judges in Monroe County, I am excited to see this year’s program launch.”

Demario Strickland noted its educational benefits: “Participating in J.U.S.T. L.A.W. empowers our students with essential knowledge about justice and civic responsibility.”

The initiative was developed by WDKX owner Andre Langston alongside Supreme Court Justice Craig Doran as a collaborative effort involving various local entities including radio station 103.9 WDKX.
