Monroe County Executive Adam Bello announced on April 13 the return of the Department of Environment Services’ annual Mobile Household Hazardous Waste and Pharmaceutical Collections program.
The program aims to give residents across Monroe County a safe way to dispose of potentially harmful materials. There will be a total of eight mobile collection events: four for household hazardous waste and four for pharmaceutical waste.
Appointments are required for all household hazardous waste collections, which can be scheduled through the Monroe County/WM ecopark website at www.monroecounty.gov/ecopark. Any resident in Monroe County is eligible to make an appointment at any location, but businesses cannot bring their hazardous waste. At these events, residents can dispose of up to 30 gallons of chemicals such as paint, automotive fluids, fertilizers, household cleaners, and pool chemicals free of charge. Medical sharps and syringes must be brought in approved containers or sturdy alternatives like laundry detergent bottles that are capped and labeled “SHARPS.” Vaping devices should be contained in a zip-type plastic bag.
Household hazardous waste collections will take place from 7:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on May 16 at Perinton Department of Public Works; June 13 at Ogden Department of Public Works; September 19 at Penfield Department of Public Works; and October 3 at Irondequoit Department of Public Works.
Pharmaceutical collection events do not require appointments. Accepted items include prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, ointments, creams, sprays, inhalers as well as sharps and syringes in approved containers. These collections will occur from 9 a.m. to noon on April 18 at Churchville Park; June 27 at Mt. Read Wegmans; July 18 at Hamlin Town Hall; and August 15 at Fairport Road Wegmans.
These mobile events supplement the ongoing schedule for electronics, pharmaceuticals, tires, appliances, general recycling, and household waste drop-off (by appointment only) available every Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning at the Monroe County/WM ecopark facility.
