On January 9, 2025, a National Day of Mourning was observed to honor former President Jimmy Carter. Mayor Evans released a statement reflecting on Carter’s life and legacy.

Carter, born James Earl Carter Jr., began his journey from modest origins as the son of a peanut farmer. He rose to become the Governor of Georgia and later served as the 39th President of the United States.

During his tenure as Georgia’s governor, Carter became an influential figure in the Civil Rights and “New South” movements. He supported key legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, standing against many southern officials who opposed these laws.

As President, Carter used America’s influence to promote democracy and foster global peace and prosperity. Domestically, he worked to restore integrity and decency in presidential standards during a time when the nation was healing from Vietnam War and Watergate scandals.

After his presidency, Jimmy Carter, along with his wife Rosalynn, continued their commitment to service through various initiatives, most notably their involvement with Habitat for Humanity.

Mayor Evans encouraged Rochester residents to “pause for a moment of prayer or reflection” in recognition of Carter’s century-long life filled with service and leadership. The mayor expressed hope that people would find inspiration in Carter’s virtues.
