“APAA P.I.E.” Exhibit at City Hall Link Gallery to Run Through May 31

Mayor Malik Evans proclaimed the month of May to be Asian Pacific Islander Month in Rochester; and, celebrated the opening of the Asian/Pacific Islander American Association of Greater Rochester’s (APAA) 2023 “APAA P.I.E.” exhibit during a reception last evening at the City Hall Link Gallery.

Dedicated in memory of Marilyn Ajavananda, a long-time Democrat and Chronicle journalist, the 2023 APAA Link Gallery Exhibit – entitled APAA P.I.E. – honors Asian/Pacific Islander American (APA) Pioneers, Innovators, and Entrepreneurs (P.I.E.) for their contributions to the Rochester community.

May is National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, commemorating the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. in 1843, as well as the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1969. In 1978, former President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution, pushed through the House by Representative Frank Horton of Rochester, proclaiming National Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Week. Two years later, Congress passed legislation extending the observance to a month.

The APAA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization committed to “a stronger Greater Rochester Area community where diverse Asian/Pacific Islander-American (APA) peoples are valued, and their heritages and histories are preserved and celebrated.”

The City of Rochester values the visual arts as an educational and aesthetic experience. More importantly, the City sees local art as part of the culture of this region. With this in mind, the Link Gallery, established 1981, promotes the art and art culture of the area. The Gallery, located at 30 Church Street on the first floor of City Hall in the corridor connecting Building A to Building B, is open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Link Gallery is free, handicapped accessible, and open to the public.
